Luis Cortes was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, by a single mother. After high school, he had a desire to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His first duty assignment brought him to Tidewater, and he moved to Virginia Beach in 1999. After serving his country for 7 years and gaining experience in the field of information technology, Luis worked for the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. After his 4th child was diagnosed with autism, Luis decided to leave the government sector to create his own businesses.
Luis became the successful owner of a Security Firm and a Landscaping Company. During this time, he also focused on educating himself about autism and how to best care for his son. Luis is passionate about helping students with special needs. Luis believes that parents know their children best and should be respected and put at the center of the decision making process regarding the needs of their children.
In 2017, he went to Puerto Rico for a year to assist in the recovery efforts of Hurricane Maria. After returning, he added another business to his portfolio by becoming the owner of WVXX, the only Spanish radio station in Hampton Roads. Luis has also has served with Hotel Kids, a non-profit that helps to provide housing to homeless children.
